Review RequestsCurrently Open (restricted)
The only review copy format I accept is Kindle gift copies directly from to my email address. I am not considering print copies or mobi/PDF attachments or downloads. If your book is not yet released, please wait until it is available on Amazon before making a request. Thank you for understanding!

As explained in this post, I am likelier to accept review inquiries for books on my wishlist. Please check back soon!

Thank you so much for your interest and for your time, but as explained in this post, I have too much catching up to do to take in more. I wish I could really—books are my babies—but right now it is too much for me to juggle on top of school and Korea. Sorry from the bottom of my heart. But do check back as I hope to open up my queue again soon!

If you are an author or publicist who has requested a review before the above date, your book is probably lost somewhere among the deep recesses of my nightstand. Please understand I am slowly working my way through the entire pile and will be in touch when the review is posted.

As of 2013, I've also been incorporating a DNS (did not start) list for books I have taken on as projects but could not, for the life of me, get into. These are books I've given up on, for lack of a prettier way of saying it. My heart hurts whenever I have to do add a book to that pile, but please understand that due to the volume of requests and time constraints, I maintain the right to not write a review even after receiving a complimentary review copy. If you find your or your client's book on that list, please contact me; in lieu of a posting a review, I am more than happy to host the book with a different promotion (interview, guest post, or spotlight) and am willing to waive the normally required giveaway.

Books à la Mode's Radical Review Policy

Generally, I will not just review books I pluck off my bookshelf. I only feel the need to write reviews about books that:
❤ Highly deserve my review (examples here)
❤ Have been specifically requested for review

Preferred Genres:
I am a literature nut, and usually will be open to reading any fiction novel. Specifically, I love, in order of preference:
❤ Literary fiction (think Mitch Albom, Ian McEwan, and Barbara Kingsolver)
❤ Chick-lit (think Sophie Kinsella and Ann Brashares)
❤ Young adult (think John Green, Lauren Myracle, and Meg Cabot)
❤ Romance (think Kristan Higgins, Donna Kauffman, and Jill Shalvis)
❤ Erotica (think Maya Banks and Tiffany Reisz)
❤ Women's fiction (think Emily Giffin)
❤ Paranormal/Urban fantasy (think Jeri Smith-Ready and Cassandra Clare)
❤ Suspense/Thriller (think Dan Brown)
❤ Mystery (think Lisa Jackson, although I love cozy mysteries too!)
❤ Middle-grade/Children's
❤ Fantasy/Sci-fi
❤ Memoirs (think Julie Metz's Perfection)
❤ Historical (think either Fever 1793 or Philippa Gregory)

If your novel is a crossover of any of the above genres, there is a chance I will LOVE it!

Because Books à la Mode is not an 18+ blog, if I review books with erotic content, graphic details will not be provided, but rather, the storylines or the writing styles will be described.

Genres I Hesitate Upon:
I seldom reject review requests, but find historical and nonfiction titles more difficult to become enthusiastic about. This also includes historical fiction and historical romance; I'll try it, but in my experience, four out of five historical novels I've read have been unenjoyable.
You will see a scattering of self-help, religious, or political book reviews on here, but they are by all means, more uncommon. I am not adverse to the occasional memoir or health-related guide, such as fitness books or cookbooks.
Please note, that I speak of politics and religion platonically at my blog. My reading a Christian biography or something written by George Bush has nothing to do with my own political or religious affiliations.

Review Format and Compensation:
At this time, I will only accept paperback copies, hardcover copies, or bound galleys (proofs or ARCs) of books for review. All eBooks, PDFs, or unbound manuscripts I receive will consequently be deleted or removed from my files.
I do not charge any monetary compensation for my reviews, but do require a print copy to be provided. I am not an affiliate for any book retailers such as Amazon and Barnes&Noble. Any links you find on this blog directing to such sites are only to facilitate book searches online, not for me to receive a commission on book sales.

Turnaround Time:
Due to the volume of requests I receive, if a review is not given a specific due date, the time I take to read and review it, will be to my discretion. This could mean a few weeks to a few years. Sometimes, there are books that sit on my "to-review" pile for up to months at a time because they are not at the top of my priority list. That being said, the only books I WILL consider reviewing by a certain deadline are books that:
❤ I am hosting a promotion (author interview, giveaway, et cetera) for
Are part of a book tour
❤ Have a release date that needs my review to be coordinated with
If you are an author or publicist who urgently needs a review of a book that's already been released, just contact me and I am more than happy to negotiate.

How I Write
I am a firm believer in honesty when it comes to reviews. After all, these are reviews I am writing, not jacket flap praise. This means that when I do gush about how much I loved a book, it will be a prospect on my own thoughts and mine alone, and not because I want to sound "nice". I, under no exceptions, consider requests by authors, publishers, or publicists to change my ratings or alter my reviews. If you write or publicize books and cannot tolerate a critical review, you may want to reconsider your career choice.
At the same time, I hate for my audience to confuse honesty with harshness. Criticism and slander are on two completely different spectrums; my negative reviews will always no matter what, maintain a respectful tone.
In my opinion, there are no such things as bad books. Simply, there are books that aren't right for my taste. You will never find me bashing a book for how bad it is. Similarly, I will seldom commend a book for being good, either. However, I may harass/compliment the author's writing style, the plotline, and the characters. Books that I don't like are a result of my personal preferences, not because they are bad books. Lowly rated books at my blog may have writing styles I find hard to read or plots I find boring. To anyone else, it may be the quite opposite; they could determine the writing style of that same book as incredibly breezy, and the plot, thrilling. Vice versa with books I give ten hearts to.

Not all books I accept will be written a review. Books on my declined pile are examples of those I have accepted, but could not finish or write a review—not even a negative review—for. Please understand this happens, and consider working with me on some sort of promotion instead.

I repost all my reviews to Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Paperbackswap, and Goodreads. Periodically, I will update my LibraryThing, Shelfari, and RandomBuzzer accounts. If there are any other sites you would like me to post my review to, please include them in your request.

If you have read my policy carefully and thoroughly and would like to submit a book for review, I can be reached at modishbooks [at] gmail [dot] com. If I don't respond to a request within five business days, please don't hesitate resubmitting your query. Every so often, emails automatically get sent to my spam folder or I overlook them when my inbox gets full. If you have attempted to send multiple requests and still have not heard back from me, post a comment below expressing your interest. Be sure to leave your email address so I can respond.

Thank you for considering! Americanflag
