Drawn into the conspiracy surrounding Abigail, Nick soon discovers the danger is bigger than he ever believed. Now he must uncover the truth to save her and himself. Gripping and intense, this novel is a twisted thrill ride from bestselling author John Rector.

Writing a Thriller without Anyone Getting Shot

In 2012 I finished my fourth novel, Out of the Black. I’d written three others before that one, The Grove, The Cold Kiss, and Already Gone,. Each one a suspenseful, fast paced noir thriller filled with plot twists and realistic, everyday characters. There were also several scenes of shocking violence in those books that I delightfully used to crank up the tension and hopefully shock readers out of their comfort zones.

I was proud of those books, and I still am.

Then, in December of 2012, something unspeakable happened at a small elementary school in Connecticut, and things changed.

I’d just begun work on a new novel, and for the first time it was a real struggle. I’d sit down each morning to write, but whenever I came to a violent scene involving a gun, my brain shut off and the words dried up. I fought against it, but that only takes you so far with writer’s block. Eventually I accepted what was happening, and I started to look for a way around it. I began to wonder if I could write a dark, propulsive, and intense page-turner where no one got shot. I didn’t know if I could pull it off, but I knew I wanted to try.

Like my previous books, Ruthless turned out to be a suspenseful noir thriller with realistic characters and all kinds of plot twists. It’s fast paced, hard-boiled, and at times intense. There are still a few violent scenes among its pages, and the characters are rarely, if ever, out of danger. There’s even a gun.

But no one gets shot.

And for that reason alone, Ruthless is one of my favorites.
