What is one "unwritten rule" that you think everyone should follow?
Bullying or verbal harassment (at work, restaurants, social scenes, etc.) are two things I can't stand, but they're not illegal, so you see lots of jerks going around mouthing off to everyone anyway. Especially when it involves young children, who could be particularly sensitive to bullies. It gets on my nerves big-time.

Interview with Lindsay McKenna, Author of Night Hawk + Giveaway! (US/Can only)

I'd like to welcome the Lindsay McKenna, to the blog today to celebrate the exciting release of Night Hawk from HQN Books, a imprint of Harlequin Romance.

Welcome to Books à la Mode, Lindsay! Let's get this interview started.

Will you please share a brief introduction with us?

A U.S. Navy veteran, Lindsay McKenna was a meteorologist while serving her country. She pioneered the military romance in 1993 with Captive of Fate, Silhouette Special edition. Her heart and focus are on honoring and showing our military men and women. Creator of the Wyoming Series and Shadow Warriors series for HQN, she writes emotionally and romantically intense suspense stories.

It's amazing to get to feature you today! Readers, here's a bit about the book, the 10th installment in the Jackson Hole series, which hit shelves last month:

Once upon a ranch in Wyoming...

After losing his comrade, Sergeant Gil Hanford thought a visit to the man's widow would be the decent way to honor his late friend. But Gil found more than comfort in Kai Tiernan—he had always secretly desired beautiful Kai, but a sudden, mutual passion helped assuage their grief... until duty reared its head, removing him from her arms, seemingly forever.

Four years later, Kai is starting over at the Triple H Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Born a rancher, she is looking for a new beginning—but her new boss is unforgivably familiar. Kai has tried to move past the memory of what happened between her and Gil, even though she's never forgiven him for leaving her. But even as they begin their journey toward something new and oh-so-uncertain, a shadow emerges, determined to claim Kai for itself.

How much of your real life is in your plots?

I always write from direct or indirect experience. I write “close to the bone,” which means I take reality and turn it into fiction for my readers.

Are the characters based off people you know in real life?

I never base a character on an individual person. Rather, I look at the type of personality needed for the plot I’ve hatched, and then begin to cobble the hero, heroine, and secondary characters around them.

As a sucker for first lines, I'd love to hear the first sentence of the book. Can you give us a brief commentary as well?
Kai tried to get her heart to stop pounding so hard in her chest.
I wanted to convey to the reader that something was happening to Kai, the book's heroine, implying danger or threat or that something bad is going to happen—or something she dreads. In this case, she’s on another job interview with another rancher to be hired as a mechanic to take care of all the machinery on the ranch. She’s already tried many others and been told no, because she’s a woman. And most male ranchers never think of a woman being a mechanic, only a man. Kai has come to this ranch in Wyoming, hoping that the man who owns the ranch will look beyond her gender and see that she’s a highly competent mechanic.

Where can you be found on the web?

It was a pleasure to be able to get to know you better today, Lindsay! Thank you again for dropping by, and best of luck with future endeavors!

In the professional field, I've experienced many women facing discrimination and having to work harder than men to keep their jobs (or equal salaries). Growing up, I personally have always been told I can't behave roughly/loudly or "like a boy" because it's unladylike. As a kid this seemed like the most unfair thing in the world!

In the years since her cancer treatments, physician Devin Shaw has researched the curative powers of Lake Haven's mineral waters. Unfortunately, the hot springs are on Barrett property, forcing Devin to strike a bargain with the ranch's attractively gruff owner: she'll give Cole's children the magical Christmas they deserve, and Cole will allow her patients access to the springs. Interview with Linda Lael Miller, Author of The Marriage Pact + Giveaway! (US/Can only)

Brought to you by the fabulous Little Bird Publicity...

It's my pleasure to welcome one of the most widely recognized names in the Western romance, Linda Lael Miller, to the blog today to celebrate the kickoff her of new The Brides of Bliss County series with The Marriage Pact! Welcome to Books à la Mode, Linda! Let's get this interview started.

Will you please share a brief bio with us?

As the daughter of a town marshal, Linda has come home to the western lifestyle that gave birth to one of today’s most successful authors. She left Washington years ago and pursued her wanderlust, living in Arizona and London and traveling the world. Now the author of more than 100 novels, the “First Lady of the West” is glad to be back home, writing contemporary and historical stories that have earned her awards and placements on all the national bestsellers lists.

Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher's Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Tell us a bit about The Marriage Pact, which hit shelves last week.

Series: The Brides of Bliss County #1
Page Count: 384
Release Date: May 27th 2014
Publisher: HQN (Harlequin)

The women of Bliss County are ready to meet the men of their dreams! See how it all begins in this enthralling new series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller...

Ten years ago, Hadleigh Stevens was eighteen and this close to saying "I do," when Tripp Galloway interrupted her walk down the aisle. Now that she's recovered from her youthful mistake and Tripp's interference, Hadleigh and her single friends form a marriage pact. She doesn't expect Tripp to meddle with her new plan to find Mr. Right—or to discover that she's more attracted to him than ever!

Divorced and eager to reconnect with his cowboy roots, Tripp returns to Bliss County to save his ailing father's ranch. He's not looking for another wife—certainly not his best friend's little sister. But he's never been able to forget Hadleigh. And this time, if she ends up in his arms, he won't be walking away!

It’s exciting to read your new The Brides of Bliss County series! What inspired you to write this new series and how long have you had the idea for The Marriage Pact?

I was actually inspired by my own penchant for arts and crafts, since I love to make things, and by the beautiful state of Wyoming. In the books, three women friends, all successful in their own right, decide to help each other find husbands. One of the women is a jewelry designer, and she makes a special bracelet charm to represent each of their romances. If I hadn’t already been inspired, my visit to Jackson, the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park last September would have done the trick.

In The Marriage Pact, Hadleigh is determined to find Mr. Right but it turns out Mr. Right isn’t who she thought he would be. Do you think most relationships are like that?

Maybe not most relationships, but definitely a lot of them. I think we human beings have a tendency to look for love (and everything else) in strange and faraway places, instead of in our own backyard.

The pressure to get married can be huge for women. Do you think you can really find love when you are “looking” for it? Or is it easier to fall in love if you aren’t on the hunt?

Complex question! I do think it’s possible to find true love by actively looking for it—several of my friends have done exactly that. On the other hand, there is something to be said for letting the chips fall where they may.

The group of women Hadleigh makes the “marriage pact” with are dear friends to her. Do you have a group of friends like she does? What makes friendship between women so special?

I do have a group of very close friends, people I would literally trust with my life. Women are especially good at friendship, I think, because they know how to nurture, and they’re generally quite empathetic.

A circle of good girl friends is a must! Where can you be found on the web?

It was absolutely delightful getting to know you and your brand new series, Linda! Thank you so much for joining us, and a BIG congrats on the books x
