In My Arms Tonight by Sasha Clinton Giveaway (US only)

In My Arms Tonight
Sasha Clinton

What if you can’t help but hurt the person you love?

Kat Cullen has it all—a staff writer position at the New York Times, beauty, independence—until she finds herself alone on the subway at night with a rapist. Saved by Alex Summer, a democratic candidate running for mayor of New York, she develops an unexpected friendship with him.

Alex’s chaotic past is the kind of juicy scoop every political reporter dreams of—which is why he keeps it hidden. But as he starts falling in love with Kat, he opens up to her about his darkest secrets. What he doesn’t know is that Kat already knows all about him, and she’s on an assignment to expose his history.

Caught between truth, love, and ambition, two people must figure out the politics of the heart.

In a romance heroine, I look for the ability to not take herself too seriously (overly self-conscious and neurotic characters kill me), as well as general tact and grace. In a hero, I love humor and courage (they need to be willing to slay dragons and whatnot heh).

Vanishing Time by Katharine Britton Giveaway (US only)

Vanishing Time
Katharine Britton

Cama Truesdale’s ex-husband and young son leave Boston for a "boys only" fishing trip in South Carolina’s Low Country. In the early morning hours, Cama is jolted awake by a phone call. There’s been a fire on board the boat. Her ex-husband is dead. Her son is missing and presumed dead.

As she sets off for South Carolina, Cama's belief that her son Tate is alive is unwavering. But her frantic search soon stirs up painful memories that send her reeling back to her childhood and the mysterious car crash that killed her Gullah mother and white father. As the clock ticks down, exhausted, haunted by dreams, and stymied by the police and local community, she enters a world in which she must rely on instinct over fact, and where no one and nothing is what it seems—not even the boundary between the living and the dead.

Vanishing Time is about how grief can shape reality and the power of a mother’s love.

Books à la Mode is giving away two signed print copies of Vanishing Time—that's two winners total. Yay!!

Choose one: Characterization, Setting, or Plot. Which do you value most in a novel and why?
Please make your comment MEANINGFUL. Comments solely consisting of stock responses or irrelevant fluff like "Thanks for the giveaway!" will not be considered for entry. Katharine and I really want to hear from you guys! :)

I value well-written, realistic, and lovable characters the most. It all boils down to this: a novel with a boring storyline and setting but excellent characterization can still be one of my favorites, but it almost never works the other way around.

Blind Stitches by J.B. Chicoine Giveaway! (Open internationally!)

Blind Stitches
J.B. Chicoine

Nikolai Solvay has been dreading his sister’s wedding, but when his father dies unexpectedly two weeks beforehand, his return to New Hampshire promises to rake up his worst nightmares.

Meanwhile, talented young seamstress Juliet Glitch has been putting the finishing touches on the wedding dress. Mother of the bride—former prima ballerina and Russian expatriate—asks Juliet if she would hem her blind son Nikolai’s trousers for the funeral... and the wedding.

When Juliet meets Nikolai, he draws her into the whirlwind of his unraveling family that makes her own quirky domestic situation seem normal. Confronted with the Solvay’s delusions and narcissism, Juliet must decide if her developing relationship with Nikolai is worth the turmoil as she deals with her own unreconciled past.

Either way, Nikolai cannot stave off the repressed memories surrounding his mother’s defection from the Soviet Union twenty years earlier. Against the backdrop of autumn 1989, during the Glasnost era, Nikolai’s family secrets crash alongside the crumbling Berlin Wall.

About the Author

I sign my paintings "JBChicoine" but otherwise I’m known as Bridget Chicoine.

I was raised in a family of seven children in Amityville, Long Island, New York during the 60’s and 70’s. Aside from basic art classes in high school, I'm a self-taught artist. I received my first set of ‘real watercolors’ from my father for graduation, and thereafter briefly attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. However, by the early 80’s I had begun raising a family and pursued art only intermittently at first, but as my results improved (and my time freed up), so did the frequency of my painting. My remarriage in 1990 to my husband Todd, also an artist, gave the most impetus to my desire and ability.

As far as my writing, I've been coming up with characters and stories since I was a child. I started writing seriously in 2006 and undertook educating myself on improving my craft and about the publishing industry. Working on my painting simultaneously with my writing, one creative outlet stimulates the other. Much of my inspiration comes from having lived near the ocean and in New Hampshire's Sunapee Lakes Region.

Currently, I live in Michigan with my husband, working on various projects.

Readers, here's a bit about this new book!

Reality just got a bit too real for this queen of an empire.

Blake is living a life that most women could only dream about. She's beautiful, brilliant, fierce, and doesn't know how to quit. She's built an empire, made millions, and fought her demons. When she's invited to host "The Takeover", a new reality show, she's quick to take on the challenge. The show is an instant success...and Blake's life becomes an instant mess.

Blake's new celebrity status comes with a catch: notoriety. That notoriety uncovers secrets that Blake would have rather kept buried. The worst is her ex-husband Lang, a jealous, obsessed man intent on destroying everything Blake has built.

Blake's success and money become her weaknesses, leaving her with very few people to trust. This only gets worse living in the public eye. Lang uses Blake's celebrity and feelings of isolation against her as he enlists the help of people from Blake's past to ruin her. Unfortunately for Lang, Blake didn't get where she is by backing down from a fight.

When Brett, Blake's ex-flame appears, she finds herself hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. Their complicated history soon has her life spinning out of control.

As Blake struggles with the chaos, and the feeling that she can't trust anyone, she starts to wonder if the life she has is even worth the fight.

When Lang's schemes escalate, Blake finds herself on the edge of losing everything...

Sizzling with celebrity fantasy, This Life goes inside an action-packed world of wealth and power, secrets and deceptions, revenge and betrayal-where staying on top could mean paying the ultimate price.

Describe the This Life in six words (or less!).

Good people behaving badly.

What was the inspiration for the book?

I’ve always been curious about women who reinvent themselves and are not occupied with being good girls. I created a character who was neither very good, nor very bad.

As a huge fan of first lines, I’d love to hear the first line of This Life. Could you give us a brief commentary on it?
Faint whispers came out of the hall closet as Blake stepped out of the bathroom.
The bathroom is one of our most vulnerable places. We expect to be left alone there.

I wanted to start with Blake acting innocently and show how quickly she can shift.

Which character from This Life was most difficult to write?

Robin Love. Because of the circumstances in her life, she chose badly. She reminded me of women who have so much potential or may have been cheered on when very young, and never quite blossomed into the woman everyone thought they would become. Robin was waiting for her life to happen, and she got a little impatient.

Some randomness...

Most romantic thing a guy has ever done for you? 12 long red stem roses arrived in a long white box at work. He took a good hint!

How do you get over heartbreak?  I don’t think I ever do. There’s always a tiny hole there. I just learn to live with the hole.

- - - - - - - - - - -

Give us your best personal advice—something you wish you'd known when you were younger and would offer to your own kids.

When you’re alone, you attract the most attention. When you’re in a crowd, no one cares.

What is the message in This Life that you want readers to grasp?

I want them to know that sometimes we have to be a little bad to get what we want in this world. Fortune favors the bold, so the saying goes.

Where can you be found on the web?

Before we conclude this interview, is there anything you'd like to ask our readers?

Blake has a painful secret that she reveals in the book. If you told someone your biggest secret, would they scream, cry, or laugh?

It was an absolute pleasure to be able to get to know you better today, Maryann! Thank you again for dropping by, and best of luck with future endeavors!

The Amazing Power Behind Writing Fiction: Notes from The Publicist by Christina George + Giveaway (International!)

The Publicist (The Publicist #1)

Behind every book, there’s always more to the story.

Can one woman change an age-old institution like publishing? Probably not, but Kate Mitchell sure wants to try. As a publicist with a large, respected New York publishing house, Kate finds herself at the mercy of a broken publishing system, books that don’t always sell (at all) and author egos that are often, well, as big as the island of Manhattan.

Enter the star Editor, MacDermott Ellis. Tall, handsome, charismatic, married, and ready to save the day. Kate wants to do the right thing but her hormones seem to be driving her decisions. Then there’s Allan Lavigne, once a revered author, now as forgotten as yesterday’s news; and his nephew Nick, who wants to sweep Kate away from New York for another coast, California.

As Kate tries to navigate the land mine of publicity, the over-the-top author expectations, and the careful dance of “I’m sorry, your book isn’t on the bestseller list this week”, she also finds authors who are painfully overlooked by a publisher wanting more sex, more celebrities, and more scandal.

Welcome the the world of publishing. The ego has landed.

The story only an insider could tell.

Publishing: An industry of out-of-control of egos, unrealistic expectations, and books with the shelf life of milk.

This is Kate’s world, but for how long?

When one of Kate Mitchell’s star authors is carted away in handcuffs, she thinks it’s only the beginning of her troubles. As her world crumbles around her, Kate desperately looks for anyone to hold onto but finds that happy endings are truly works of fiction. When her career and love affair hit their expiration date, Kate sets off on a new adventure...

Starting over in California is easy, but Kate soon learns that leaving her old life behind isn’t. Nicholas Lavigne is eager to help her forget, but two things still own her heart, the dream of discovering the next great American novel, and MacDermott Ellis.

As Kate tries to rebuild her life she finds a surprising gift that reboots her career in a new and unexpected direction. Suddenly her name becomes synonymous with one of the biggest bestsellers publishing has seen in ages and she’s welcomed back with open arms. At the height of her success the ghosts of her past come back to remind her of the world she’d been trying to forget and the man who never let go of her heart.
