Top 10 Changes Made to Under an Adirondack Sky by Karen Rock + Giveaway (US/Can only)

Under an Adirondack Sky
Karen Rock

Can he juggle everything... including her?

After raising his siblings and running the family pub for more than a decade, Aiden Walsh has set his own dreams aside. Until the most beautiful woman he's ever seen stumbles into his bar, and his arms. Too bad Rebecca Day is the school psychologist in charge of his brother's future. Who's he kidding? He doesn't have room in his full life for romance anyway. But forced to join Rebecca and her group of troubled teens on an Adirondack retreat, he realizes keeping his family afloat isn't enough for him... not by a long shot.

Changes I Made to Under an Adirondack Sky

Thanks so much for having me on Books à La Mode! It’s a treat to be here on your wonderful blog talking about the crazy, out-there and whaaaaaght?! changes that happen when turning a manuscript into a novel. Here’s a list of ten changes that played a big—and little—part of making my July Harlequin Heartwarming release, Under an Adirondack Sky a funny, heartwarming romantic read.
  1. The heroine, Rebecca Day, was originally Laura, Christie Bates’s roommate from my first Harlequin Heartwarming novel, Wish Me Tomorrow! However, that character had OCD and, as it turned out, Heartwarming was having a character with OCD in a book that was releasing the month before mine. We agreed that was too close, and we changed the character completely.
  2. Rebecca and my hero, Aiden Walsh, were going to fall in love as she worked in his pub, a position she was going to take after losing her second job as a coffee barista. Instead they fall in love while on a wilderness retreat she insists he chaperone to help him bond with his troubled younger brother, Conner, who is Aiden’s ward.
  3. The book was originally set primarily in SoHo, NYC and wasn’t going to be in the Adirondacks at all! Very glad for this change of location as I got to do a lot of great outdoors, summer camping/hiking/canoeing/climbing type of scenes that brought the story to life.
  4. Rebecca’s backstory was a lot darker, including time in a hospital, but I decided to lighten it up this time and have a fun, romantic summer read.
  5. Connor was going to be the one to go overboard in the rapids.
  6. Rebecca was originally described as being this classic beauty—a French film star look—but as I got to know her quirky, funny and big-hearted personality, I changed her appearance to reflect that about her. She’s still pretty, but in an off-beat way that is perfect for Aiden.
  7. Rebecca’s dog was changed from a German Shepherd named Angel to an overweight pug named Freud. (More quirk, less classic lol).
  8. The scene where Aiden and Rebecca head into Lake Placid to look for a “Pink” gift for his little sister, as he promised her, was added after the book was written! We felt the couple needed a little more time on the page and it was fun to have them hang out in one of my favorite places in the world. I mean where else can you get Duck Quesadillas for lunch?
  9. I decided to have Rebecca’s boss, the school superintendent, as well as school board members attend the kid’s showcase event to add more pressure and raise the stakes. Yikes.
  10. I had to take out some of the Rick Astley “Never Gonna Give You Up” lyrics during the 80's dance-off scene because of a copyright rule but I got to leave in enough to still make me laugh out loud as they did the “Rick Roll,” PHEW.
I love this topic! It was so much fun to go back and look at the changes to the manuscript and see how much it transformed Under an Adirondack Sky. I’m super excited for everyone to read it and get the same laughs and swoons that I did when writing it. For my discussion question, Rebecca, Aiden and the teens get into lots of jams while on this camping trip. What is the craziest thing that ever happened to you while on a trip or vacation? Please share in the comments section for the giveaway. I’ll be checking in today and can’t wait to read about your adventures!
