Review

Shea butter is an added ingredient in many lotions, creams, and conditioners—an essential plant-based butter that has multiple beauty purposes for face, body, and hair. In pure, raw form, it is is rather firm and waxy, and comes in slabs. I was a little confused as to how to actually apply raw shea butter, since it wasn't in cream form, but apparently melting the product makes it so much easier. You can do this by warming a small amount of it between your hands, then rubbing it into your skin, or by actually adding heat to it—over a double burner or in a microwave.

Shea butter is easy to melt since it is an oil product. It melts just as solid coconut oil would. The fragrance of shea butter isn't entirely unpleasant; it's kind of nutty and earthy, but it does NOT smell like your typical lotion. I suppose the fact that there is no added fragrance or color makes it a great all-natural alternative to store-bought body butters, but it certainly looks and smells less attractive.

While I do agree this pure shea butter provides long-lasting moisture and never feels greasy, it is tacky and very waxy in texture. Even when I applied melted shea butter, it felt waxy after a few hours; way too thick and feels like residue. It's fine for my legs and arms, but I would not like this stuff on my face.

I was also mildly displeased by the packaging. The butter is wrapped in plastic wrap, then contained in a plastic bag like in the pictures. There is no tub, jar, or any way to dispense it sanitarily. I guess if you made your own lotions with it, it would be easy to cut into pieces, but for every day, direct usage, it's a huge inconvenience to just have a brick of shea butter sitting around.

Shea butter is known to be great for sensitive and dry skin—especially to eczema sufferers—and since there aren't any added chemicals or fragrances in Beauty by Shea's product, it won't break you out or cause an allergic reaction. Of course, like all tree nuts, shea nuts are known to be an allergen for some people, so make sure you are not allergic to shea before you use this!
