Mental Health Giveaway Hop!

The Cause

Mental health is an issue I'm actually very passionate about. I'm studying pathopsychology right now and would love to pursue a career field in a clinical area. I'm also interested in the stigma and culture behind mental health, how it gets the backburner in health care and consideration because people don't see mental disorders as "real" diseases, when in fact, disorders such as PTSD, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, are just as legitimate health problems as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are.

Recently, I went on You Mean More's Campus Suicide Prevention walk, where I found this shocking infographic about depression and suicide in university settings:

This is weighty stuff, people. You can't just not talk about it just because it makes you uncomfortable.

At thirty-nine, Bartholomew Neil still isn't ready to leave his mother's nest, but when he loses her to cancer, he's left with no other choice. His once-stable, once-routine world—of just him, his mother, and God—crumbles to pieces when one of his biggest role models, Father McNamee, consequently denounces himself from the Catholic church, and in turn, becomes more than just a religious father figure to Bartholomew, by becoming a human being.

Convinced that his other beloved role model, Richard Gere, is watching over him now that God no longer is, Bartholomew begins a one-way correspondence; these letters are what make up the entire novel. This fantasy relationship he creates is the only thing that still connects him to his deceased mother, considering she was Richard Gere's biggest fan, and the sole belief that he is guiding Bartholomew as if they were old friends, leads to unexpected discoveries and profound self-inquiry.

The unique narrator is what stood out to me, first and foremost. It is not a shock that Quick would write a protagonist who isn't quite normal—one who clearly suffers from a mental disorder, but internally, is the same as any and all of us: deeply, imperfectly human. Bartholomew isn't a grand hero, no, but he glows with sincerity and is a compassionate, warm character; his brilliantly observant and self-recognizing tone will capture the hearts of readers just as that of The Silver Linings Playbook did.

Matthew Quick is skilled not only at providing perspective, but also at conveying the necessity of pretending—not out of delusion, but out of self-preservation—and the sheer magic of believing—whether through faith or through faithlessness. While the book is stylistically simple, it will make you think hard and think long; Bartholomew's introspection on religion, political correctness, and the nature of existence, will make your mind turn. There are moments where you'll disbelievingly relate, and resultantly be touched—fate—and the way the story proceeds rather messily, but falls into place, piece by piece—synchronicity—will provide immense comfort; this is a story for the soul. Whether through acts of God or through coincidence, Bartholomew's life changes gradually at the discovery of an unlikely cast of new friends, and through little achievements that propel him forward further than he could imagine; it is you, the privileged reader, who gets to go along for the ride.

Things You Didn't Know About Lindy Dale and Storm in a B Cup

A lot of the novel was actually written in various hospital rooms around Perth. I spent much of 2012/13 in hospital and because it was so boring, I wrote a lot. The plastic surgeon used to laugh when he came in because I was always cross-legged on the bed, with a laptop and numerous drains/drips dangling about the place. He said I looked like human spaghetti.
I am addicted to coffee and chocolate (not as badly as the main character Sophie, though. I’ve never eaten an entire carton). Visitors to my hospital room knew better than to bring grapes. I got champagne and sweet things.
Most of my female lead characters have names ending in an ‘e’ sound: Sophie, Millie, Lily, Georgie, Daisy. And my daughter, Darcey, has one too! I think they sound ‘girly.’
During my treatment for cancer, I developed a little crush on one of the medical team (Shhh, don’t tell my husband). He features quite prominently in Storm in a B Cup. Of course, the man in the story is completely hot and irresistible.
Like Sophie, a guy actually felt up my prosthesis at a party. Poor fellow was a tad embarrassed when I pointed out it was fake.
I went to a rugby match (huuuge fan) while in hospital. I got special leave for the night from the doctor. The security guys at the ground searched me because they thought I was smuggling alcohol in but it was only the fluid drain from under my arm. Slightly awkward. For them. I thought it was funny, though.
All the places mentioned in Storm in a B Cup are real suburbs of Perth. You can Google pictures of King’s Park. It’s very pretty.
In the story, Sophie makes a list of funeral requests in case she dies. That scene actually happened but it was a discussion with my children (who are adults). My husband always said he wanted to play this maudlin Nick Cave song when I died so I put the kids in charge and told them if they didn’t play U2 I would come back to haunt them.
Sophie owns a hats and bags shop. I’m more of a shoes and bags girl, though I don’t get much use for them now I live in the country. But you’d better believe when I go to the city for appointments that Spencer and Rutherford is coming out.
Earlier this year one of our sheep gave birth to the cutest little black and white lambs but she had no milk to feed them so we had to. I’ve named them Greg and Marsha, after the lambs in Daisy Darling.
