Radical Review

First of all, you guys should know I am NOT a morning person. I have 8am classes this semester which absolutely will be the end of me; waking up early to have a hearty breakfast is something I can't do. I literally wake up thirty minutes before class starts, shower, get dressed, and then I'm out the door. On these days, breakfast typically consists of a protein bar (I love Luna and Clif!) and a piece of fruit—not entirely the healthiest option out there, but like I said, I'm not the kind of person to wake up an hour earlier to scramble eggs and pour milk into cereal.

Woe is me.

This is why I was so stoked to try BFAST shakes; they give you the same nutrition content as fiber-packed cereals and calcium from milk, but they're in an easy carton, so you can take them to go. What's not to love?

The first flavor I tried was Berry.
This was a few weeks ago before school started, so I took poured myself a glass to take a picture (what you see is about half of the 8oz carton), but it was before I hit the gym. I had a morning pilates class that day, so again, this was exactly what I needed.

Berry BFAST tastes like a thicker version of strawberry milk—yum! I don't know about you, but I can't exercise on a full stomach. It makes me cramp up and makes my insides feel miserable. BFAST is filling, but its portions are just enough to keep you feeling satisfied, rather than too full and bloated.

Drinking it plain was a little too sweet for my palate, but even 4oz (half a package) was adequately filling, so I stuck the rest in the fridge and made a smoothie afterwards as my post-workout snack:
This is just 1 cup of frozen blueberries, 1/4 cup of frozen spinach, and 4oz of Berry BFAST; the shake works as an excellent substitute for milk, juice, and/or yogurt which I normally include in smoothies. Super, super yummy, and the perfect way to get your daily vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in!

My main reservation about Berry BFAST is that it has a slightly metallic flavor to it, akin to that unfortunate moment when you accidentally taste your vitamins while swallowing. It isn't bitter or too unpleasant, but you can definitely taste the fortified iron.

Paired with the fact that it was a little too cloyingly sweet, I'm certain that if I hadn't blended it into my smoothie, I wouldn't have liked it. As an alternative, you could also "water" it down with some skim milk; this would not only dilute the sweetness, but also make the shake last longer. It's what I do with fruit juices, but with water!

The next day, I tried the vanilla:
This is my least favorite flavor because it tastes like thickened vanilla milk—or maybe a melted vanilla milkshake—and it was way, way too sweet. I actually had to milk it down to drink it straight up. I noticed the metallic flavor again, which didn't make me too happy a camper, but I was again satisfied with how filling it was. Love that I got lots of protein and fiber—with minimal fat and cholesterol—in, as well!

I saved the Chocolate BFAST for last, and it definitely was the best:
Again, it tastes like a sweetened, thickened version of chocolate milk, but there is no metallic taste to it, which pleased me greatly. I downed the whole thing in a minute because it was so good. I didn't even stop to think to mix it with milk because even though it was really sweet, I still loved it! By far, my favorite flavor, and probably the reason why I will end up buying BFAST on my own.
