I want to take a quick break from my usual book posts and share with you guys, the launch of a cool website. It's about time I post more health-related stuff at Books à la Mode!
HealthKeep is a brand new social network that focuses on health conditions. It's a completely anonymous site—with different forums for each condition—where you can share your experiences, learn from and connect with others who have had similar experiences, and receive updated news articles pertaining to your condition.
I've always had back problems so I surfed the page about back pain. I was pleased to stumble upon a user who has had back problems for the exact same reason I do (strenuous workouts), but even more exciting, were the news pages containing relevant tips about getting rid of back pain, recent medical research about possible pain relief (through yoga, which, I just happen to be taking right now!), and some insightful reports on alternative therapy.
What I find so useful about this site is that it tailors to your personal health needs. Because of biology's twisted sense of humor, not everyone is affected by the same condition in the same way. Symptoms, causes, and treatment can differ from person to person, so being able to share and discover those who have had similar experiences, not only secures your health—since you'll have access to invaluable advice—but also keeps you alert for possible symptoms and broadens your overall sense of knowledge on the issue. You can never have too much information when it comes to health conditions! Facts from the doctor are facts, but the real tried-and-true contributions are what really count.
I think everyone should at least give this site a browse. It's nice to know there's a community out there that can support and teach you things you can't learn from the doctor's office.
