"I am Britannia. I am your protector. I will fend off the hungry hordes of undead hands that reach toward you. I am your steadfast defender. I will stand between you and the zombie masses as they try to taste your flesh. I am strong, unyielding, and dedicated to your survival. All I ask from you... is your blood."

A five-hundred-year-old bloody game of vengeance will need to be put on hold if vampires are to survive the zombie uprising. Britannia and Nicholas, bitter enemies and the only two surviving vampires left in London, have to work together to save un-infected humans and deliver them safely to a vampire stronghold in the Scottish Highlands. Unable to drink the zombie "bad blood", the remaining vampires need the humans to stay alive. But will the vampires tell the survivors who they are and what they want from them? Will Britannia be able to hold back her vengeance for the greater good? Is survivor Josh the reincarnation of Britannia’s murdered true love? And can she bring herself to deliver him to the "safe" hold? Survival instincts run deep, but bad blood can run deeper.

Boiling Up Some Bad Blood: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Nicky Peacock's YA Novel

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved reading, and being a writer was an evitable step. Three years ago I decided to take action to achieve this dream and started writing short stories for various anthologies. Next thing I knew, I’d had over 40 accepted for publication and I’d made valuable contacts at publishing houses all over the world. One of those publishers was the wonderful Noble.

I first emailed the idea of Bad Blood across to them—I wasn’t sure if combining the two popular genres of vampires and zombies would work, but they loved the idea and asked me to write it, then send it across to them.

So how did Bad Blood go from crazy idea to published book? Well, I started with a character... Britannia. I wanted a leading lady that was a kick-ass action hero but also identifiable for a teen audience. At her heart she’s a bit of a daydreamer and very naïve when it comes to love and men. Although being over four centuries old, she’s held fast to the belief in true love and has been stubborn enough to not deviate from it. As a human girl she was engaged to her first love, and that feeling, instead of fading through the years, became all-encompassing—in all that time she hasn’t even looked at other men, let alone kissed one!

To survive the inevitable horrors I was to throw at her, she also had to be made of some pretty steely stuff so I made her a fighter, a hunter, a defender of the realm, and a sometime assassin. She’s certainly not squeamish and starts off with only a lingering regard for people. But her most ardent desire as a character is revenge on her arch-nemesis Nicholas, the vampire who killed her true love, kidnapped her, made a vampire against her will, and imprisoned for over 20 years in a misguided attempt at seduction. When she was finally free, Britannia swore to avenge those misdeeds, so has spent all those centuries attacking Nicholas and his various minions.

In the majority of zombie novels, they are the decaying, flesh-chomping mechanism the writer uses to either destroy, or unite, their human survivors, and although Bad Blood still follows this trend, I wanted more than just the zombies as an obstacle to overcome. To keep humans safe, and therefore maintain a food supply for vampires, Britannia must work together with Nicholas; although she doesn’t always keep her violent thoughts to herself, she does learn a lot in the process and discovers more about Nicholas than she bargained for.

Britannia’s strength is a massive asset to her in the zombie apocalypse, but she needed more to get her through. So I introduced the character of Josh, an American soldier who bears a striking resemblance to her murdered fiancé. She believes he is the reincarnation of her lost love, and as she lets that side of heart grow, she also starts to feel more for the rest of the survivors in her reluctant care.

I’d like to think that Bad Blood is an action-packed read brimming with emotional twists, but really, the true description would be up to you, the reader. There’s much more to it than I’ve included here, but true love, revenge, zombies, and kick-ass vampires got the pot boiling and I’ll be stoking up the fires more in the next instalment, so why not download the eBook or buy the paperback today and come along for the ride?

About the Author

I guess I’ve always been a storyteller, not in a "liar liar pants on fire" kind of way, although I do work in advertising! When I was little, kids would crowd around me in the playground and I’d tell them tales of blood soaked horror filled with vampires, werewolves, ghosts and more. Yes, most would consider me a disturbed child, but my playmates couldn’t help themselves, they’d huddle around me every break time like an ancient tribe feeding off the fear; and that’s how I learned that horror stories hold a certain power, no matter what some might say, everyone is addicted to a good scare, especially if it is somewhat rooted safely in unrealistic beings... or are they unrealistic?

Writing was really a natural progression. Right now I’m obsessed with writing: a YA Urban Fantasy novel, a Paranormal Romance novella series, and several short horror stories! So I’m currently living in a functional fiction coma—and loving it!

I’ve so far been published in five countries: USA, UK, Australia, Irelandm and Canada, and have had short stories included in 30 anthologies with over 17 publishers.
